TIDA-00757: Questions on Motor and Relation to Power Supply Using Batteries

$

0

Part Number:TIDA-00757

Hello,

We have a project which is based on reference design for smart lock TIDA-00757.

In order to get more flash memory and smaller space, we modify two blocks:

  • Main processor uses MSP432+CC264R2 as SNP
  • Motor driver uses DRV8837

We need help to understand more about the motor driver in relation with the supply side that uses 4 AA Alkaline batteries for our project.

Fresh batteries give us more than 6V and we drained it into 5.2V (each becomes 1.3V). When we try to turn on the motor at this 5.2V level, the board restarts itself.

Our DC motor has stall current around 2A and no-load current around 200mA on 3.5V.

Although DRV8837 is rated on 1.8A, we still can control the motor when batteries voltage is still fresh.

  1. We think that it is related to internal resistance of the battery. From open loop and close loop test with a resistor and voltmeter, we calculate the internal resistance of our battery at 0.8 Ohm on 1.3V while at fresh we have smaller resistance from 0.15 Ohm to 0.3 Ohm just like Alkaline Energizer E91 datasheet.

When the motor starts, it draws 2A current and the drop voltage on internal resistance becomes 4 * 0.8 Ohm * 2A = 6.4V and since the batteries itself already on 5.2V then the whole system voltage just drop below acceptable range and the microcontroller gets no power.

However at fresh batteries the drop voltage on internal resistance becomes 4 * 0.3 Ohm * 2A = 2.4V. With batteries voltage at more than 6V there is still available voltage of more than 3.6V.

  2. On TI reference it shows the buck input accept range from 3.7V to 6V. We design our system to work on voltage range from 4.4V to 6V.

In case when the batteries drop at 5.2V, if we modify our motor to 1A stall current we would get a drop of 4 * 0.8 Ohm * 1A = 3.2 V and our available voltage from batteries 5.2V - 3.2V = 2V. This shall be the voltage that feeds in the buck.

However when batteries voltage reach 4.4V then internal resistance on each battery increments to around 1 Ohm or more from our test. It gives us drop voltage 4 * 1 Ohm * 1A = 4V. So available voltage at motor start from batteries 4.4V - 4V = 0.4V.

This might as well create same problem where microcontroller gets no power.

  3. Above points focus on the stall current which will have effect on motor start and when motor stall. When motor already runs with a load and draws current for example 500mA.

At fresh batteries or 6V with each internal resistance 0.3 Ohm, the drop voltage would be 4 * 0.3 Ohm * 0.5A = 0.6V and actual output from batteries will be 6V - 0.6V = 5.4V.

If we drive the motor with 100% duty cycle (full on), then our motor speed would follow the torque-speed curve chart for 5.4V and not for 6V.

Questions:
Are these analysis correct? Would you please kindly advise if we have misunderstanding?

Kind regards,
Pranata

I am using Aluminium electrolytic capacitors and I need to add the parallel resistance RPar in simulation in TINA. But I cannot find the value of this parameter in the datasheet. I have looked at datasheets from different companies but only came across ESR. This might be an easy question but please can someone please explain the RPar parameter and how to obtain it?

TIDA-01371: Follow the reference design, shall I remove those components which are canceled in tiduci3a.pdf, but still in Altium?

$

Part Number:TIDA-01371

Hello TI,

I am confused in following your TIDA-01371 ref. design. Could you please help me to understand this design correctly?

1. R40,R38, one 1MΩ shunt resistor is in parallel with a feedback cap of a opamp as an integrator, Both are cancelled with a red cross in datasheet, but are still in the schematic of Altium

What is the purpose of these 1MΩ resistor? the bleeding resistor to reset the integrator? Shall I keep them on board?

2.  C26, C28  are also cancelled in the datasheet,

What function do they play in circuit, why are they cancelled in datasheet? Shall I keep them on board?

3. C16 and C7 are dual caps in the symmetrical design, why only C16 is canceled in datasheet? For simulation temporarily?

4. R34+C23 and R35+C24 are both the Zobel network. Why R34+C23 is canceled in datasheet? For simulation temporarily?

5.  R36 and R9 are zero Ω . The shorted BJT Q8 and Q6, which control the input voltage of those LDOs. If they are cancelled for other temporary purpose, why they appear in the schematic of Altium?

These are all my questions.

Looking forward to your answers.

I have two doubts about which I want very detailed explanations.

(1)According to TIDA-00281 its 1KW BLDC motor application with Vdc=48V. With this parameter, we can approximately find out current which will be 20Amp around.

In this case why MOSFETs are selected with Id rating of 197Amp?

(2)How RCD Clamp is designed for this application.(Please visit the site to view this file)

TINA/Spice/AM3352: IBIS Model Query

Part Number:AM3352

Part Number:AM3352

Hi,

I am simulating USB1 data signals in HyperLynx 2.4 using ibis model provided by ti.

For USB1 data signals model is defined as NC in ibis model, so at the time of assigning model i cannot select it as output(refer below images). As it is data signal i can define any connected IC as output driver but my problem is signal is passing through Common Mode Filter with ESD Protection for that i have assigned S-parameters then to connector which is also defined as input only.

So, at the time of simulation I get error of No output driver selected.

I have tried to change the ibis model by changing model to selector, but in that case though it is allowing me to define it is as output  I get my output according to selector pull-up defined(1.5V  or 1.8V or 3.3V) and not the expected (400mV) signal.

suggest me how to define R17 and R18 pins of AM3352 as I/O or which selector should i select as all selector are having pullups defined ? Please send updated ibis model for these two pins defined as I/O.

Hi ,

I was trying to use the source code from "TIDA-010021-CalibrationProcedure".

Step-1: Cover Photo Diode and measure illumXtalk

Step-2: Calculate max illumXtalkScale as multi channel and register set illumXtalk commonScale

Step-3: Remove cover, set target at reference distance, load illumXtalk calibration data and run

2 Questions:

I'm not too sure about what is action needed for Step-2?

And what is the "reference distance" mentioned in Step-3?

TIDA-020011: frequency range for automotive in-cabin usage

$

0

Part Number:TIDA-020011

TIDA-020011 uses AWR1642 that operates in the 77 GHz automotive frequency range for gesture control.  However, in the FCC Equipment Authorization Guidance for 76-81 GHz Radar Devices, April 12, 2019, footnote 3 states that "Radar devices intended solely for automotive in-cabin usage are not permitted under these rules."

https://apps.fcc.gov/kdb/GetAttachment.html?id=%2Fx%2Br4gdJBN%2Fufbbqx7TXBg%3D%3D&desc=653005%20D01%2076-81%20GHz%20Radars%20v01r01

Do you know what frequency range would be appropriate for automotive in-cabin usage?  Are you aware if there exist any other automotive applications that cannot be validly operated in the 76-81 GHz frequency range?  None of the language of Part 95 Subpart M gives an indication of this.

TINA/Spice/TLV2401: Help with simulation model

Part Number:TLV2401

Tool/software:TINA-TI or Spice Models

Hello,

I want to simulate the TLV2401 amp because I'm thinking about adding it to my product design.  I have downloaded the attached spice model.  It is called "TLV240xC PSpice 15V Supply Voltage Model" and linked below.

http://www.ti.com/product/TLV2402/toolssoftware

Questions:

1. Why are there three different models for different voltages?

2. I need to use this part with a small negative supply (dual supply instead of single supply configuration).  My positive supply is 6-7.5V and my negative is -1.25V.  It can be -2V or -3V if needed.  Can I use the 24V model to simulate this?

3. In the text file the circuit model pins 1,2,3,4,5 don't seem to match the comments.  Please see the attached model text file I downloaded from the above link.  If I slide the comments over showing the "connections" they don't match the pin out shown in the data sheet for this part.  Why don't the pins in the txt file/circuit model match the data sheet pins for the TLV2401 DBV package on data sheet page 2?

4. How do I know which pin is which for this model?

TIDA-00961: Several Questions to TIDA-00961 PFC

$

0

Part Number:TIDA-00961

Dear Salil, Dear Hrishi, Dear Texas Instruments Team,

I have got several questions to the TIDA-00961 PFC:

1) In the schematics, there is R231, R232 and R234 all connected to the same point. I assume this is to allow different options. The values with 1M are not really used. So ZVS2 and ZVS2_2 is not used. The same with R229, 230 and R233?

2) There are two signals CT_SENSE1 and CT_SENSE2. Are they used with current transformers? In the BOM I could not see current transformers.

3) The G_AC_I is not used in software and also not in hardware. The U204 and R221 cannot influence the U207 output. Only R222 and R224 take full control.

4) In the schematic, I think the J205 is drawn incorrectly. It is mirrored some way.

5) I did not find bulk capacitors in the schematic. Did you use external bulk capacitors? Hiw much uF? Which load did you use to run the PFC? What is the maximal resistance value (lowest load) that can be used?

6) Do you have got control software that you can provide and which comes along with the TIDA-PFC? In your code, you write

//GUI support variables

// sets a limit on the amount of external GUI controls - increase as necessary

volatile int16_t *varSetTxtList[16]; //16 textbox controlled variables

Can you provide the GUI for the PFC?

7) Can you provide some pictures of your test setup of TIDA-00961?

Many thanks in advance for your reply

Best regards

Patrick
